CAMPUS SUMMARY
Founded in 1855, Berea College was the first college in the South to admit blacks and whites, men and women on an equal basis. Berea's mission is to provide an excellent education to students of all races who have great promise, but limited economic resources. We focus our efforts on graduating young men and women of significant academic achievement who have high personal standards and embody Christian values of loving one's neighbor, the dignity of work, charitable service, and a deep concern for the welfare of others. Berea's biblical motto, "God has created of one blood all peoples of the earth," expresses well the College's non-sectarian Christian faith that welcomes persons of other faiths and traditions. Berea is located just south of Lexington, Kentucky where the bluegrass meets the Cumberland mountains. Within one hour's drive of campus are many outdoor recreational facilities including the Kentucky Horse Park, Shaker Village, Cumberland Falls, Cave Run Recreational Lake, Boonesboro, Natural Bridge and Pine Mountain State Parks. A town of 10,000 people, Berea is known as the crafts capital of Kentucky. Berea's beautiful 140-acre campus has 30 academic and residence hall facilities, some of which are national historic landmarks. With a nationally recognized instruction program and a rich collection of resources, Hutchins Library is the distinct leader among private colleges in Kentucky with more than 325,000 print volumes, approximately 1,500 current periodical subscriptions, and a rapidly expanding array of web-based journals, indexes, and databases. We have a spectacular new athletic and recreation center, an impressive science center, an outstanding center for the performing arts and an active student center.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
While a student population of approximately 1,500 allows Berea College to maintain relatively small class sizes and to provide ample faculty attention to enrolled students, the College offers a large number of special academic programs. In particular, students are able to propose independent majors (in such areas as women's studies, neuroscience and communication); take part in independent studies (in all academic departments); and propose team-initiated studies with other students. In particular, Berea provides financial support for study abroad and for summer undergraduate research. Berea College has a greater percentage of students engaged in studies abroad than any other college in Kentucky, and Berea students are able to attend January Term programs at other private colleges in virtually every area of the United States.
